Before the arrival of humans an estimated 80% of New Zealand was covered in forest. Massive deforestation occurred after humans arrived. Many species, such as the Kiwi, faced extinction. All five recognized species of Kiwi are endangered due to deforestation. Grapes are grown in New Zealand to make wine, a substantial export or the country.
